Chinese Drywall Testing: Sampling and Analysis

Numerous homes manufactured in the United States between the years of 2004 and 2008 incorporated drywall made in China. Many of these homes now exhibit odors characteristic of sulfide. People living in many of these homes have reported a host of medical symptoms including; headache, nausea, nose bleed, memory problems and respiratory conditions.

In addition to medical symptoms, it has been shown that many of the homes manufactured with Chinese drywall also exhibit corrosion of copper in electrical and plumbing systems as well as corrosion of jewelry, mirrors, plumbing fixtures and other metal surfaces. Studies have demonstrated that such corrosion is attributable to the same sulfide emission that is responsible for the reported medical symptoms.

Harold I. Zeliger, Inc. has developed field and laboratory protocols to inspect, sample and analyze drywall in homes for propensity to emit harmful sulfides.

Harold I. Zeliger, Inc. provides the following services for each home investigated:

bullet

Visual and olfactory inspection

bullet

Hydrogen sulfide meter readings throughout the house

bullet

Inspection of air conditioning units where feasible for signs of sulfide corrosion

bullet

Inspection of electrical wires for evidence of sulfide corrosion

bullet

Inspection of copper plumbing lines for evidence of sulfide corrosion

bullet

Inspection of mirrors and other metal surfaces for evidence of sulfide corrosion

bullet

Taking of wipe samples of corroded copper surfaces

bullet

Inspection of the backs of drywall sheets for markings indicative of manufacture in China

bullet

Photographing all signs and indications of corrosion

bullet

Photographing all drywall markings indicative of point of manufacture

bullet

Taking of samples of drywall in three (3) different locations in each house

bullet

Carrying out laboratory analyses of the collected samples to determine the potential for these to release hydrogen sulfide

bullet

Report preparation, including photographic evidence

bullet

Storage of duplicate samples for potential future analysis

bullet

Storage of wipe samples taken for potential future analysis

In addition, Dr. Harold I. Zeliger, president of Harold I. Zeliger, Inc. is available for testimony as an expert witness for litigation involving any of the homes inspected and tested.
